Dobro

In Russia the state does not provide specialized assistance to autistic children. These children are either isolated from their peer group without access to any kind of education or in closed institutions with little stimulation. Dobro is a specialised day centre that diagnoses, treats and provides advice for autistic children, young people and their families. The dedicated staff use the internationally recognised TEACCH programme to help severely autistic Childrem playingchildren and young people desire communication and learn self-help skills so that one day they may live in the community. Dobro is based in Moscow's Central District, but offers its services across Russia. The centre also takes a lead role in training by publishing articles and books on its work.

Over the next few years Dobro aims to:

  • Improve consultations and correctional classes with autistic children
  • Train specialists to work with and educate autistic children
  • Develop new approaches and methods to integrate autistic children into society
  • Expand interaction with the state system of special needs education , with international colleagues working in the field and with parents of autistic children from other regions of Russia

Partners in Hope supports this project because

Dobro is one of the pioneers in providing practical assistance to children with autistic spectrum disorders. It is an example of good practice, and a project well placed to promote the development of community-based services throughout Russia.
